Local Summer Reading Programs

To Encourage and Motivate Your Kids to Read All Summer Long

July 23, 2015

As the school year ends, you may have started to think about summer reading and how to keep your kids motivated to read all summer long.  Well, there are several programs offered by the local libraries as well as by Barnes and Noble and Showcase Cinema to help!  Check them out:

At Barnes and Noble, you can earn free books by reading.  Simply read 8 books and record them in the reading journal on this site http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/summer-reading/379003570/  Next, bring the completed journal to your local Barnes and Noble (there’s one in Worcester and one in Millbury).  Finally, choose your free book from selection on the Reading Journal list at the store!

Showcase Cinema hosts Bookworm Wednesdays every Wednesday at 10AM in July.  All you do, is download a book report form from the website HERE.  Then, read your book and complete your book report.  Finally, bring the completed book report with you to the movie theatre on selected Wednesdays and the report is your admission ticket!

The Gale Free Library in Holden will host a Summer Reading Club all summer long.  It will help you keep track of how much time you spend reading and you can earn prizes too!  Children of all ages are welcome to join and signups begin Monday, June 22nd and signups continue through August 15th.  To sign up, just stop by the Children’s Room Desk at the library.  At that time, you will receive a Reading Log and you will check off every 15 minutes of reading.  You sign in once per week at the library and the Librarian will add up the time you have spent reading and award you a sticker and your prize! Beaman Memorial Public Library’s Reading Program runs for eight weeks and begins on June 23 and ends on August 11. The theme is “Every Hero has a Story” and is sponsored by participating local libraries, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commisioners.  It is open to any patrons with an active library card for the CWMARS system, the only stipulation is that the patron has to read books from the West Boylston collection to receive the raffle tickets for their summer prizes. Early readers receive one raffle ticket for each book they read on their own and chapter book readers receive five tickets for each book read. The library will keep track of the number of books that the children read over the summer by having them “log in” when they come to the library. To learn more, visit the Beaman Memorial Public Library’s website at www.beamanlibrary.org

The Worcester Public Library will host a summer reading program where participants can earn prizes as well.  You can download a reading log at their website www.worcpublib.org and keep track of your reading, listening to audiobooks and attending library programs over the summer.  All ages are eligible to win prizes and the more you read and participate the more chances you have to win.  Log onto www.worcpublib.org to learn more and to register.
