Spring at Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center

April 16, 2015

Spring has sprung and it’s time to start getting the kids out to play!  My kids and I have started to spot some of the early signs of spring, and Mass Audubon’s Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center and Wildlife Sanctuary in Worcester is helping us to turn it into fun activities.  We wanted to share these fun games with you HERE and to also share some information about Broad Meadow Brook.

Have you heard the call of the red-winged blackbird "Konk la ree"? Have you seen the mourning cloak butterfly? It's our earliest butterfly. Have you heard peeting of the spring peepers in the vernal pool? Have you noticed buds on the trees? Look for all of these in your neighborhood or come on down to Broad Meadow Brook and search for them there.  They have some beautiful trails and play areas and offer all kinds of fun activities and events for you and your family.  Broad Meadow Brook in Worcester is the largest urban wildlife sanctuary in New England, with more than 400 acres cooperatively managed or owned by Mass Audubon. Interpretive signs will guide you along well-marked trails through woods, fields, streams, and marsh. This includes a sensory trail that is about a ½ mile long and is handicap-accessible which means it’s also great for strollers!  There is also a nature play area which serves as a natural “playground” for the little ones.  Admission into Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center and Wildlife Sanctuary is free for members and Worcester residents and $4 for adults and $3 for children ages 2-12.  If your budding naturalist would like to spend more time getting to know our natural world in a hands-on way, check out their April vacation week options or Summer Day Camp options. You can also learn more about Broad Meadow Brook HERE including information about hosting birthday parties, information about their special activities and events and more!
